The key is, they aren't the same. Toyota goes the extra mile to ensure quality, and they have company philosophies that are enforced at every chance: 'don't pass on the defect' is the biggest one.
- Every car plant has a repair facility for vehicles that aren't perfect when they come off the line. For most manufacturers (all American BTW) that facility is a "repair yard" about 3-5 acres. For Toyota, there are no more than FIVE (5) repair BAYS. When all 5 bays are filled, assembly stops, and the problems are corrected.
- Every Toyota plant has a pull chord that allows ANYone in the facility to stop production to make adjustments as needed. For the typical 20 hour assembly process of a Camry, the chord is pulled aproximatley 20 times. That means the entire assembly process STOPS until the problem is rectified.
- Quality assurance goes a long with Toyota. They have 2 torture tests they perform on motors. In one of them, they run a randomly selected engine at full throttle for 180 hours straight. Another one, they take another engine, run it up to redline, hold for 7 seconds, and then drop it back to idle. They repeat this proces 200,000 times. If the engines can handle this, your daily commute should be NO PROBLEM at all!
And this is just the tip of the iceburg.
To suggest that Daimler-Chrysler has improved Chrysler's reliability is to advertise your complete ignorance as to what is going on. Mercedes cars are DEAD last in 5 year reliability rated at problems per 100 vehicles.
American cars aren't even close. They are great for 3-4 years, but then all hell breaks loose. Literally. The worst thing about American cars isn't their constant need for repairs, it's the fact that after 3 or 4 years, the car feels OLD. That's one arena the Europeans have a huge advantage over American cars, but American cars, are, on average, much more reliable than Eurpean cars.
All Asian cars are not created equal. Nissan has gone down the sh.tter. Mazda is stilll pretty good. Honda Rocks. And all of the Korean cars are complete crap. So is Suzuki.

Toyota will QUICKLY correct the FEW design flaws they encounter,
as they are very protective of their reputation. American car makers are slow to correct flaws, waiting until the next redesign, usually about 8-10 years.
Example: Chrysler waited YEARS to finally correct faulty designs in transmissions in their minivans, as the profit from replacement parts was quite good.

That is purely perception anymore. In the 1970's American car manufacturers got sloppy. The Japanese got better.
Currently Chrysler is under the Daimler-Chrysler auto group along with Mercedes-Benz. Daimler-Chrysler quality equals or surpasses Toyota.
Although Toyota has a much larger market share (second only to GM).

Toyota build the best cars because they pioneered the production system that is now used by all car manufacturers( and many other industry's). TPS (Toyota Production System) is all about eliminating waste (muda),if you build a crap car then you are wasting your time and money. Toyota also works with the principle of kaizen( continuous improvement ), so that they stay ahead of the opposition.

American cars, as a rule, can't go round corners, have tons of horsepower and et fuel like it's going out of fashion, but look great and sound amazing.
Asian cars are all built by bike specialists so they rev high and have tons of torque. Good looks too.
European cars have luxury and reliability, coupled with performance and handling.
But I'd go Asian (Subaru Impreza or such like if you're on a budget) and you'll get good looks, performance and pretty good reliability.

Since fuel prices were always high in Japan, they have engineered cars that get good MPG.
And they don't buy cars every two years, like the American advertising idiots have sold us.
Toyota cars last awhile, American cars are better than they used to be, but still are made to break, Ala "planned obsolescence.
they have the autobahn in Europe so I know they like fast cars.

Because think about this: Asians are a lot technical and smarter than Americans (not being racist). That's why I've always been hearing that Japanese cars are not as luxury as they're strong, and Americans cars are not as strong as they're luxury!
