how do I get to know the year a car was made from the regestration plate. What is the system and how does it work.

Suffix registration plates looked like: A-3 numbers then 3 letters
Prefix registration plates looked like: 3 letters then 3Numbers-A

To add a missing detail not mentioned on that link ...
the letter Q HAS been used. Vehicles with Q registration are self built. Most trikes have Q numberplates and so do a lot of kit cars.

The registration mark does not tell you when the car was made, it tells you when it was first placed in service. Go to the DVLA website and it will explain it all there.
