He likes to bark, run around and pounce on people whom he thinks is frighten of him. He also likes to chase joggers, cyclists and vehicles. When I try to catch him, he will run "wild" and start playing "catching" with me.

My dog did this and I never knew why.. One day when I was very angry (not at her) I was yelling and screaming.. She humped down and whined..

Sounds like you have dominance issues. You have to let your dog know you are in control. Next time it does something wrong, look it strait in the eyes and use a LOUD firm voice to say no and that was bad. He will get the point.

When I train puppies to not do something wrong, I pick them up by the hide of their neck and lightly (not hurting them) and shake them just like their mother would if her pup did something wrong. It is a method used in training German Sheps for K-9 units.

If he is a mature dog, training may be a bit longer but it can be done. Take him to obedience class and otherwise keep him on the leash, so that he gets no chance to disobey you.
I presume he is a young dog though. All above still applies, but it should be much easier to train him. Give him a reason to follow you and want to be with you! Make it fun. Play a toy/ball. If you want him to come to you, walk or better run away so that he has to chase you not the other way around. Have treats on you to reward him for coming. Praise him for doing it! Try hiding to make him look for you. It will teach him to pay attention to you.

Why on earth are you letting a totally untrained, undisciplined dog out loose so he can chase people and vehicles? And what do you think a dog's natural instinct is when someone chases him?

You need to stop letting this dog run loose before he gets hit by a car and you don't have to worry anymore about training him. You need to take this dog to obedience because you can't train him on your own. You have a responsibility to this dog of yours to keep him safe and that doesn't mean letting him out on the street. You also have a responsibility to turn him into a dog who is well behaved.

try using like a soda can with some pebbles in it, and shake it when he misbehaves. dont let him/her see the can when you do it. the sound may grab his attention. also speak in a totally different tone for scolding- usually a low, disapproving tone... then walk away. if the dog follows, tell him/her no, in the same low tone.

its really hard to fuss at a dog when they want to play- arent dogs great though? =)

Establish dominance. Be stern, do not chase him yell at him this will frighten him. When misbehaving, pin him til he gives you "puppy dog eyes" the body language for I give.

Try putting him on a leash and take him for a walk. When he starts his bad behavior, give a gentle tug on his leash and tell him no. Or just call the dog whisperer.

Have you done any training classes with him, or are you training him on your own? Our local Petsmart offers classes, and I'd highly recommend them or another professional course to help both of you learn the ropes.
