None of it has to make you sick, but I find the old warning "don't mix the grain and the grape" is true for me. (Not that it stops me from doing it.)

If life has treated you right, you never had to learn the answer to your question on your own. But, considering that life can be a real *****, I m thinking that in July of 2009 you indeed learned that wine before liquor/ liquor before wine: you re gonna throw up... a lot. If your night went anything like mine did yesterday, you began it wondering whether it was a good idea to take those shots after you chugged that wine...and you ended it with your head in a toilet. However, you and I are both older and wiser now. Wine before liquor is a no-go.

The only saying about wine and liquor I've heard is "wine is fine, but liquor is quicker". I can never remember the "beer before liquor, never been sicker, liquor before beer, never fear" saying, so I just mix beer and liquor for my first drink and the problem is solved, kind of.

because wine has less alcohol than liquor the beer rule still applies

it comes down to the beer or the wine making you a little tipsy, then losing your inhibition to drink too much

Generally "beer before liquor" or "liquor before beer" is for someone who gets drunk then takes a quick shot and puts themself over the edge.
If you watch your drinks, you can do it in any order you want.

it's up to YOUR body if this will work for you or not. for me, i hate wine. my stomach doesn't like the taste of it at all. however, beer & mixed drinks i can drink approximately $60 worth to get drunk. that's fun sometimes. in all honestly, each person's body is different on how they react and handle alcohol. try it and find out and then you will know for the future. good luck with that.
