Veal is the meat of calves, specifically the male offspring of dairy cattle, and is appreciated for its delicate taste, tender texture and nutritious qualities.

French veal is meat from a calf that is kept on milk as it's only food source way past the point at which it should have solid food. It is kept in a special cage, to prevent it moving or lying down. Some farmers bleed the calves as well. The whole point is to create very light colored, tender meat.

These practices are obviously cruel, and are generally not allowed in other countries. Still, variations on these approaches are used to make veal light colored and tender.

Look for labeling that says the animal was humanely treated before you buy - and do not buy French veal.

Veal is very young calf. I am told it is very tender but as for me, I refuse to pay for, or eat, a calf that was penned up in a tiny hut and fed there to keep it from running and playing and grazing so it won't develop muscles and therefore will be tender when it's killed while it's still small. This is animal abuse and should be illegal. As long as there are so many starving people in the world, killing a baby calf is wrong for several reasons. I will not ever eat veal!

Veal used be (made?) created by kicking the pregnant cow until she miscarried. That was the tenderest veal. Yummy eh? Vegetareanism anyone?

veal is indeed a calf..it's the process of binding it so it can't move so its muscles do not develop and keeping it milk fed that millions of people don't agree with..it's also this process which makes the meat so tender....
personally I like to eat it...nothing like a good veal parm...
but i do understand why people protest it.
