They die.
Their bodies can't handle the caffine and other things in the chocolate. It causes heart problems as well.

It is not chocolate itself that is poisonous to dogs, it is the theobromine, a naturally occuring compound found in chocolate. Theobromine causes different reactions to different dogs: dogs with health problems, especially epilepsy, are more affected by theobromine than healthy dogs. Theobromine can trigger epileptic seizures in dogs prone to or at risk of epilepsy. The size of the dog will also be a major factor: the smaller the dog, the more affected it is by the same amount than a larger dog. Therefore, toxicity is described on a mg/Kg basis.

They say that when a dog eats milk or dark chocolate that it is bad for them, but my parents fed our dog milk chocolate all the time and nothing happened to her. She lived to be 18 years old.

I think it has something to do with the coco in it to why it isn't good for them. White chocolate isn't bad for them though. You can even by doggie treats that are dipped in white chocolate in pet stores.

Hi tanyabethdwyer

Chocolate is the third most common cause of poisoning in dogs. Some chemicals in chocolate, caffeine and theobromine, can cause erratic heartbeat and in large enough doses can kill your pup. Theobromine is a bitter alkaloid of the methylxanthine family. Methylxanthine = stimulants.

Hope this answers your question.

It can hurt some dogs and not even have an effect on others. My dad used to give our cocker spaniel pieces of miniature chocolates...nothing ever happened to her. It was definitely not smart, though. He just didn't know any better at the time.

Supposedly they die. Cafeine will kill them. But I think it depends on the size of the dog. My friend has a great dane that ate a whole box of chocolate syrup and didn't die. In fact he's eaten stuff like that more than once. And still is a holy terror. (Not dead). Ask a vet.

Its like humans, it will affect them in different ways. I have two dogs. One of them would puke all over when he eats chocolate and the other........well..........I wouldnt follow him around the yard when he is fixen to take a crap and if I was within 100 yards, I would be sure to have an oxygen tank so I could breathe !!

No joke, its the truth !!

It builds up in their systems and kills them. My late husband kept feeding Oreos to our Boston Terrier and it caused her to have seizures. When I took her to the vet for the seizures he told me that there is a substance in chocolate that is poisonous to dogs and cats.
