Your best option is to visit http://www.ubuntuforums.org and read all the useful information there.

After you've burnt the CD, just boot up off of it and you can run Ubuntu without installing it. Play around with it till you like it, then Click the Install icon on the desktop and follow the wizard.

Ubuntu cannot open proprietary media formats such as DVDs and MP3s out of the box, but all you need to do is go to http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/get.html and type the 4 instructions in the first box into a terminal window in Ubuntu. The codecs will then be downloaded from the internet and installed. This download will also add extra software repositories, so you will be able to use the package manager to install even more useful software from the internet.

There's a possibility that you might find the Ubuntu desktop environment (Gnome) awkward and hard to use. If that's the case then you should download the Kubuntu CD instead. Kubuntu is the same as Ubuntu, except that it uses a different desktop environment (KDE), which is more Windows-like.

Have fun!

make sure yo take an image of your OS drive before the install - just in case you don't like it that much. There are plenty of different distros out there try a few out. I'd first try the bootable systems to get a feel for them without having to do a full install. Also, a multi-boot machine is always good for a little expermenting. Have fun whatever you choose. I went with Mepis, but still need windoze on the box for work-related programs.

You should definitely know the version and how usable it is. 7.0.2 is not the best. If it is Advanced Server you find tutorials to help. Does Linux support exists? That is yet to be discovered.

Just prep your hard disk space right for any kind of OS installation. Everything else is going to be taken care of.
