There isn't much risk for the father to have a baby after 40. If the mother is 35+, there may be some issues for the child and the mother.

Actually I read an article in the paper a couple of days ago - a child is 3 times more likely to suffer from Downs Syndrome from a father over the age of 40 than from a man younger than 30 (30-40 must be in between).

The risk is usually with women having children over 40. Birth defects, mother dies during childbirth, that sort of thing. With the man all you really have to worry about is that you are in good health to raise the child. At 40, you've got a good 20 years or more at average health, which is plenty of time to raise a baby, never mind if you are in excellent health.

I did hear that if men fathered kids after 40 that the kids have a higher risk of autism...but I don't believe in any of that. My uncle had a kid at forty, and he's fine. But my dad had me at 27, and I'm disabled.

There was a news article on yahoo last night stating a study showed older fathers have a higher incidence of autistic children. I didn't read the article and since autism is on the rise anyway, I don't know how they linked the two. It might still be posted somewhere. Ask your doctor about genetic counseling.

For both men and women, certain problems are more likely to occur. Downs Syndrome is one, but there are tests to detect that very early. And I just read that older men are more likely to father an autistic child. But I wouldn't worry about it. There are always risks, no matter what your age.

There is a new study which indicates a higher risk of autism in children with older fathers. There are a few other risks...but not as many as have been identified in older mothers.
