Nobody really invented it. It is a culmination of various root languages; Greek, Latin, Germanic, etc. Words evolved over many the years by different tribal groups as each successive generation changed the way a word was pronounced. Also to take into consideration that the modern dictionary was just that. There were no universal dictionaries centuries ago which recorded standards of how a word was spelled, pronounced or even meant.
