Vodka or gin with a splash or less of vermouth.
Drinks with liqueurs and juice and other mixes are
Martini Cocktails. And they can be very tasty, but are not true martinis.

A martini is exactly gin and a dry white vermouth.
A dry martini uses less vermouth.
Vermouth, by the way is a fortified wine.
(A fortified wine is a wine that has extra alcohol added to it.)
No need to say 'gin martini'...it's repetitive. Like saying 'wooden tree'.
A "martini" made with vodka is not a martini. It's a Kangaroo, like someone already said, or a "vodkatini".
The flavored "martinis" such as apple "martinis", chocolate "martinis", and melon "martinis" are drinks that you order at the bar, and later the bartender laughs at you behind your back. These "martinis" are to real martinis, what a venti low-fat soy pumpkin cappuccino with extra foam, cinnamon, and nutmeg is to a cup of good, black coffee.
There is beauty in the simplicity of the classic martini.

A martini is a drink made with gin and vermouth. It is mixed in ice and topped with a skewered olive. There are variations of the drink and each has their own name, e.g. Gibson - replace olive with a pearl onion, vodka martini - use vodka instead of gin, dry martini - use 1/8 oz of dry vermouth, etc.
Martini recipe:
1/4 oz of dry vermouth
1.5 oz of gin
Put the ingredients in a tall glass with ice and stir with a long spoon. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with skewered olive.

martini is a cocktail many like to consume prior to dinner hour
traditionally, martini was composed of Gin and Vermouth and a green olive (usually "Martini" brand vermouth, hence the name)
variations of traditional include more or less vermouth, I like to swish a half ounce in the glass and then discard it and then add gin and olive
variations of martini in general include making it from almsot any liqor and or liquer, as you are seeing in the recipe's that have been posted
