when they're old enough to pay for it

It really depends on the individual child. If they participate in a number of activities and are out of the house a lot, it can be helpful for them to be able to get in touch with you in case of an emergency (or a cancelled practice!)

There are a number of cell phone companies that have phones designed for kids, which limit who the kids can call and recieve calls from, and limit the minutes they use.

When they are no longer a kid. Many of us did just fine without phones until we were in our late teens. A cell phone is a distraction for any kid, and is a complete waste.

this may sound kind of mean but it depends how much your kid is gone. if your kid never goes to friends houses or to parties or anything, or after-school activitys, they don't need one. then on the other hand, there are a handful of 8 or 9 year olds who desperatly need a phone becuase they are always on the go! try this. have them write down 1 time each day they would need to use there phone. use this as a guide of how much they actually need it. whatver you do, don't get one of those firefly phones! they are a rip-off and real phones are a MUCH safer idea!

I would say 12 or 13, but make sure you get a prepaid phone for them. At that age, kids like to talk and you could end up with some large bills.

I'd say when they are out of high school, employed and can pay the bills themselves. Until then, a pay phone calling card is the best thing - it's not as easy to use during school hours when students are SUPPOSED to be paying attention in class - pay phones are located where kids should be and not where they shouldn't be.

a kid should get a phone when they need it or when they have shown that they are responsible enough for a phone .personally, i think a good age is 13-15.i can't stand seeing 7and 8 year olds with phones
