Not a big Linux expert but I recomment ubuntu. The installation CD comes with a suite of other free software too so that you're ready to go - open office, firefox, thunderbird, etc.

The current most popular Linux distribution is Ubuntu. I use it and like it. I have it on both desktop and laptop. Wifi worked out of the box. You can download from www.ubuntu.com. Ubuntu has a great forum which has helped me with quick and correct responses.

For that 32 bit system, with a 933Mhz CPU, 256Mb of RAM, a 13GB drive, (have one) I use http://pclinuxos.com (based upon Mandriva, 'Bleeding Edge' of Redhat!). You see, Red Hat is conservative, and runs mostly 'stable' apps. Mandriva and PCLinuxOS run 'testing' apps.
Download is free, and can run LiveCDrom mode, providing 1900 free games and programs.
Then, depending upon what you want, you can run it as a dual boot system, with up to 23 OSes on a large hard drive. Installed, it makes the total system run upto 50X faster, plus, it gives you 5,000 games and programs. Others are here: http://livecdlist.com
There is a Manual on the desktop, plus a good forum on the homepage! It will blow you away!
Just be careful with the formatting of the drive. Give PCLinuxOS about 6Gb of space.
If you will be keeping your XP installed, then, u need to de-frag the hard drive, FIRST!
