Hi--
On Monday I wrote the following:
I think I have to put my 13 year old cat down. I'm 27 and got her when I was 14. She has been peeing and pooping all over the house for the past three months.
I called the vet and scheuled the appt. Should I have made it clear that it should be to put her down? My land lord came by the other day and FREAKED out by the smell---I shampoo the carpet almost daily.
I feel like I'm betraying her-------she hasn't been the same for months she just lies around and looks out the window---Is it time? I cannot imagine life without her. High School, College. I just don't know what to do.
Whatever happends I can't keep her.

I want to thank everyone who gave me such good, loving advice.
I did have to put my cat down yesterday. It has been one of the hardest things I have ever done. I'm still reeling. I know I gave her the best live I could. It was kidney failure. I hope she knew the joy she brought in my life. Thank you again

I am so sorry for your loss. I have an 18 year old cat, I'm 36. He's been with me 1/2 of my life. Kidney Disease is a very debilitating disease. She doesn't have to feel sick anymore, and you know she would never want to cause any trouble in your life. Do something to celebrate the time you shared with her. Maybe plant a tree, garden or make a donation to your local humane society in her name. Again, I am truely sorry for your loss...

You're not alone. Many of us have had to go through this, and it's never easy. Please know that you didn't betray her at all, you gave her the best life you could and you gave her a dignified passage to the other side. Nobody can ask for more.

The "Rainbow Bridge" story is an excellent one, and it helps many find a bit of peace. And John Q has an excellent idea in getting a pair of littermate kittens. After I was forced to put down my two elderly cats, Calypso & Tasha, I quickly ended up with first one feral rescue kitten, Nina, and a year later adopted three additional feral kittens; Zoot, Murray & Phoebe, all littermates, and they were adopted & weaned by Nina. They're wonderful companions! My life has changed greatly since then (fell in love, moved 2000 miles), but I still have Nina & The Wild Bunch (plus two more goofy calicos, KatyJane & Jasmine) and life is better than it's ever been.

And for what it's worth -- you didn't lose a pet, you gained a furry guardian angel :o)

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my Tom a few months ago i've had him since i was 3 and I'm 20 now. It is a very hard thing to deal with. I hate that you had to put her down, but at least she didn't have to continue on with the kidney failure and just waste away to nothing that is a very hard thing to watch and know that there is nothing that you can do for them. There are some animals out there that aren't lucky enough to be loved or cared for by anyone the way you cared for her. Know that she loved you very much and you brought just as much joy to her life as she did to yours. Someday the two of you will reunite never to be seperated again at the Rainbow Bridge that is one thing that keeps me going without my Tom to come home to everyday. You may one day find the strength to have another cat companion, but don't rush yourself.

You did the right thing. It would have been selfish of you to keep her alive just because you wanted her company a little longer. She is no longer in pain and is in a better place.

FYI, I had to put my dog down at age 14. She was going blind and had diabetes. She was the only thing that kept me sane after I got divorced. I cried and cried as I held her - -and the vet gave her the shot. She just sort of went to sleep and that was it. It still hurts thinking about it, but it was the right thing to do.

You gave her the best life you could and she gave you the best life and companionship that she could. Cherish those memories...

I'm so sorry for you. It is a hard decision to make. I had to put down my girl in January. She was only 3 yrs old, so I tried everything the vet could do for her. It was agonizing for her and me and our whole family. It cost a fortune, but I just couldn't give up. Finally when all hope was gone we took her to the vet and let her go. You made the right choice. You are a loving person.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When our beloved pets die, they journey to this idyllic spot. There are meadows and hills enough for all to frolic freely, and plenty of food, water and sunshine. Each and every animal is warm and comfortable.

Those pets that have been ill or aged are restored to health and vigor. Those who are hurt or maimed are made whole and strong. Each is just as we remember in our dreams of days and times gone by. Our pets are happy and content at Rainbow Bridge, except for one small thing. Every creature misses someone special, whom they've left behind.

The animals all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops, and looks into the distance. Bright eyes are intent; an eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, running from the group, flying over the green grass, legs are going faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and you and your special friend come together in joyous reunion. Happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head; and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together. Author Unknown

Hi! I am saddened by your loss. You did the right thing by putting her down. Yes, it hurts a lot. You did all you could for her and gave her a happy, long life. May I suggest you read Sylvia Browne's book about Animals. Sometimes they die so that they can continue to be with us in spirit. I do believe this.

Best wishes.
