If your liver isnt functioning, like when you have cirrhosis, you are far more likely to lose weight then gain it. Look for yellowing of the eyes, itching, tiredness.

You mean the appearance of scar tissue in the liver limiting it's ability to function. This can cause weight gain, but commonly causes the body to retain liquids. The liver isn't able to process waste products as fast, and as a consequence the body dilutes itself to prevent toxicity of those chemicals in the body. It also affects metabolism, the blood won't be able to hold as much glucose. This is due to the increased amounts of lipids in your blood as well as the displacement caused by cholesterol and other fatty acids in the blood. The body will deposit excess sugars faster than they can be metabolised because of this. The only way to help with this is to increase fluid intake, and lower saturide fats, fats in general, and calories due to unprocessed sugars. Yes, you shouldn't drink alcohol either, this will only damage your liver further, and raise glucose levels. Oh, and your tissues are retaining fluids, the only way to flush them out is to increase fluid intake. I know it sounds a little backwards, but trust me, the more fluids your drink, the better your kidneys will work. Then you can rely on your kidneys to pick up where your liver isn't able to.
