I really want one of those rings that has the boy's and girl's birthstones with the names engraved. If I hint to my boyfriend (of 3 years) that I want it, is it still special if he gets it for me? Or does he have to think of it himself for it to "count?"

You could hint to him that you want it. It will still be special because it's from him regardless. He can't read your mind honey, and if you don't hint to him, and he doesn't get it (which would probably happen) you will be upset and disappointed. If this happens, you cannot be upset with him because like I said, he can't read your mind. No matter what he gets you (knowing if you want it or not) it should always be special to you because it's from him.
Hope this helps

How is he going to know you want it if you don't hint? My husband will admit this, guys can't read your mind. Even if you said "awe! I've always wanted a birthstone ring someday" as your walking by the counter at Wal-Mart, he'll get the hint, if he's paying attention.

guys arent always the most romantic, so giving him a little hint wouldnt hurt.Show him a magazine with the ring you want and sound really interested, but be sneaky. Hopefully he'll get the hint.

hint away! b/c if you don't hint a lot, guys are never going to figure it out. and i dont think guys think about things like rings (except for wedding rings), so i dont think he'll probably ever think of getting it for you. i think it can be just as special if you hint at him to get it for you.

I think it does lose a little of that "special gift" feeling, if you have to tell them to get it. But he'll never know, if nobody tells hem. Can you let a family member know or get someone else to mention it to him, like it's their idea. Who would he ask if he wanted advice on a present....let them know you want one.

What does it hurt to let him know that you would like a ring like that for a gift on a special occasion? Nothing.
Let him know that its something that is dear to your heart and you would love to have one to share his cosmic color with, or something like that.
But no, its not wrong... go for it and see if he will get it for you.

generally... hints & guys... not get what lady likey!
but of course, yes, if you outright ask for it... not so romantic is it...? can you get him to happen to see you lookling at a picture of the ring you like or at something like it on the net.... he asks what you're looking at... you tell him how much you like it & where you saw one in town.... mr clever goes & buys it & thinks he had the idea all on his own... everyones a winner :)

Well, i've been with mine for 2 years. And well he says to just tell him what I want. So i would say, that you tell him that you really want one of those, you'll eventually get it.
