I copied files from a cd and they appear as wma files. I downloaded and tried several converter such as switch and they converted the files into mp3 but the problem is that my Wplayer9 can't play them back.

try audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net), it will record any output to your speakers but note, you will need to download (via the same site) the LAME converter to convert the audacity output into MP3 - all in all its really simple and works extremely well.

Try downloading iTunes. It works even on PCs and it's the easiest way to convert files. In the program, go to settings and change the convert type to MP3. Then you can convert any song to MP3. www.apple.com/itunes/download

You should try ripping your CDs directly in MP3. Media Player does a decent job doing this. Go to Options -> Rip Music tab -> Format section and select MP3.

You can always recopy them with Wmplayer as MP3.
There are some converters out there, but they're shady. Stay with WMA, it's really good compression.
