Just wondering if it has helped and are you pleased and are there any side effects worth noting?

How many kids do you have canadianbrowneyes? It sounds as though you have vast knowledge and experience raising children. I have three under the age of 7. We have a strict routine and schedule we follow and still my oldest has an inattentive problem. She is not hyperactive by no means, just has a very hard time focusing. But then again it could be the cocaine and meth and pot and maybe even the alcohol I ingested while pregnant. Ohhhhhh, you don't have kids...never mind!

There isn't the extreme, immediate change in behavior you notice with Ritalin or Adderal, but it works pretty well over time, and there is less risk of dependency. It can cause really bad nausea, and should be taken with food. Also, it can cause sleepiness, so I'd probably recommend giving it to your child with an evening meal.

I am a single dad and started noticing how hyper my daughter was at age 4. For a long time I was able to control it by watching her intake of sugar. In Kindergarten she got 3 notes sent home for the whole year. But by first grade it shot up to 10 and I noticed she was having more trouble paying attention. I am ADHD myseld so I had her tested. It showed that she was borderline ADD and ADHD but extremely bright. I talked with kids that had been on different drugs for this and then their parents. I wanted to hear from the kids if they felt it had helped them at all. Strattera seemed to work for some of them but it takes anywhere from 4-8 weeks to really get into the system. I decided to try my daughter on Aderall XR and we have had really good results these last 2 years. In second grade she got no notes sent home for the entire year and it was the first time she ever got an E in conduct. It took a while to get the dosage adjusted right and we still watch how much sugar she takes in. I have also noticed that certain food additives can set her off and caffiene as well. Because I also have a lot of food allergies I cook from scratch and she does not eat junk food very often. When she does see her mother for a visit she knows to watch what she eats because her mother will try and pump her full of sugar on purpose. She had no idea what a Happy Meal was until she was 6. She only drinks milk and water because juices have to much sugar in them. When we drink orange juice I fresh squeeze it so there will be no extra sugar. They told me to watch her sleeping and appetite but I have seen no difference in them. We keep the same schedule year round as they advised me to. It's harder during the summer and I do let her stay up late on special occasions. I keep her active and that helps a lot. We live in Texas so she can swim pretty much year round and we usually go for about an hour after homework is done. She plays tennis and takes piano lessons and is in the Brownies. They tell me that ADD and ADHD kids can be extremely bright if you can get them to focus. My daughter is in the Vanguard program here for Gifted and Talented children. These classes move at a greater speed than regular classes so that the kids don't get bored. Her teacher is aware of the problem and if she sees her getting restless will give her a small chore to do like handing out papers or something. I'm hoping that as she gets older she will outgrow it but if she does not, then at least we both know how to deal with it.

Why do so many parents put their kids on drugs! Try changing your childs diet first. www.fedup.com.au it's all about how addidtives, preservatives, colours, flavours and natural food chemicals can effect your learning and behaviour. Drugs should be a last resort after all other things have been tried. Sugar is usually not a problem for kids it's all the other things (colours/flavours etc) that are added to lollies or foods etc

I wanted to try my daughter on it but I was told by the psychiatrist and a few other mothers that it didn't work in their experiences.

My husband used to use it when it was brand new a few years back and it kind of strung him out.

i really think adhd is a b.s. condition that people use as a shield from consequences. people shouldnt think that they have to have drugs to make their kids act a certain way because thats what the teacher wants. all kids are different. some are shy and quiet, others are rambuncious and loud. they are all people. let them be themselves.

What a cop out.

Nothing makes me angrier than parents who give up to easily and stick their kids on drugs! 90% of drugged kids just have diciplinary issues.
