Lev 19:28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

It's an Old Testament law given to the Jews because back then it was part of the pagan rituals.

You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the LORD.
Leviticus 19:27-28

The rounding off of the hair and marring the beard and all that was part of the pagan religions at the time this command was given. Today Christians are just called to consider whether or not putting markings on their body will glorify God or not. For instance some believers might get a tattoo of a verse of Scripture in Greek or Hebrew and use it to get people to ask them about it so that they can start telling them about God.

Lev 19:28
Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I [am] the LORD.

OK this is the verse many people use but I have not met any Christian Messianic or Jew that has been able to keep the Levitical Law. I'm not even sure it not saying just for the dead or in general. The word for marks is qa`aqa` {kah-ak-ah'} and is translated "Tattoo"

Hope that helps.
God bless ya!

they are right on the leviticus verse. the reason however, according to the jewish faith, is that these are because the pagan tribes did such things and that the jewish tribe was not to do the things the pagan tribes did.

it's not that god hates such things, it's that the jews were to not do things that would be like the pagans.

context is a beautiful thing. :)

There are, but they are references to slave markings for non YHWH gods. Some particularly puritanical fundies have misinterpreted it to mean body art.
