I will be taking my chihuahua with me on a flight from Philadelphia to Phoenix. She will be riding in a Sherpa under my seat.(she is 7 pounds.) I have my ticket... but do I have to pre-register my dog? Can you tell me how much time I should allow before my flight to go through security? What should I do (if anything) about "travelers tummy?" How about medical records, should I bring them? Any other advice?

You have to have a Vet's Health Certificate, dated within 10 days of flight. All shots have to be current and dated within 30 days of travel, even if she had them three months ago, she will need to have them again. These records have to be taken to the airport, prior to leaving by about three days. You also have to alert the airline that you will be taking a pet aboard. They have very strict requirements and also they require a certain type of cage that will fits under the seat. You will take her as a carry on bag, and that will count toward one of your bags. The airlines who do permit animals on their flights have all the necessary requirements at the main terminal. Don't wait until the last minute to take care of these details, because you may get there and they will not allow you to take your pet. Good Luck.

And, yes I traveled with my pet on Continental Airlines, but she was too large and had to go cargo. What a hassle! And, she had to go on a different flight which didn't set too well with me and I had to wait about 6-8 hours in Dallas, until she arrived from Houston. Get some benedryl for travelers tummy. Which reminds me, the dog cannot be sedated for the traveling, but many people give them benedryl, but not to the point of her looking drugged.

Call the airline. She will probably need a health cert from the vet before you go. Do not feed her before your trip. DO NOT LOCK THE KENNEL. If she need medical help, the workers need to be able to get in. Mark the kennel clearlrly with where you're coming from and where you are going. Medical records are a good idea. The dog should be wearing I.D. too. A piece of masking tape with the info written on it on her collar will work for the trip.Ziplock bags work to store "poopy" in should an accident occur. The other passengers will apprecite that. That flight shouldn't be much longer than 6 hopurs so your dog will be okay with out food.

You should call the airline in advance as some allow animals and some don't. They will also advise what medical records they will need. A vet visit is usually required before animal is allowed on. At the vet, ask about doggy prozac or other relaxant as your dog will freak out (mine did). There is usually a fee involved in animal flights as well.

You need to notify the airlines when you make your reservation. I think tyeh only allow a certain number of animals in the cabin on each flight. You need to bring proof of vacinations not over a year old, and will need to allow extra time going through security they made me take my cat out of the carrier and checked the carrier.

Just let the airline know you're bringing him on board they should be fine with it.
