Our current role in Afghanistan is to pacify and rebuild the area surrounding Kandahar.

We're not there as Peacekeepers. We're there to secure the place by disarming or destroying those factions that are opposed to the lawful authority of the central government.

Our job is to allow Afghanistan to stand on its own and become a strong country of its own right, where the rule of law exists. Also, we are there to protect our interests at home, because Afghanistan is the home of terrorist groups who send many of their people here to train, hide and raise funds. Or to plan operations either against us or our allies. So if we can cut the manning pool that the terrorists already here can draw from, we can more effectively tackle that problem on our home soil.

Cannon fodder. NATO is learning what every invader of Afghanistan has learned in the past. The country may be easy to conquer but it's a bear to occupy.

Canadians have a small force there at this time. They are simply doing what many other countries are doing there. Fighting the Taliban and Bin Laden's group.
