Consumer Reports rated Ultra Brite as the number one whitening toothpaste. I think it can be hard to find, but WalMart and Target should have it. Toothpaste will only minimize surface stains (like coffee), but won't "whiten". To whiten, you do need something that will penetrate into the tooth-which would be the white strips or bleaching trays. They are perfectly safe, if that is your concern.
If you are seeing your dental hygienist regularly, she/he can polish off those stains during a cleaning. That is a great time to bleach, or to at least try the whitening toothpaste, as well as these other suggestions:
Electric toothbrushes cut down on surface stain-Sonicare claims by 80%.
Drink your coffee through a straw, so as to keep it away from the front teeth (some people say they absolutely couldn't do this, but if you can, it helps)
Rinse your mouth after coffee
FYI: other staining liquids are red wine, dark juices, tea, dark soda. Staining foods include blueberries, and other dark berries.
Again, if you really want white teeth, bleaching is the way to go-the white strips are inexpensive and effective and safe. You can always ask your dentist, but they do not contain actual bleach-they contain peroxide that penetrates the tooth and breaks down organic stain inside the tooth. You are able to monitor how white you want them, since it takes 1-2 weeks to do the whole bleaching, so you don't have to worry about them being too white either. Any other concerns, ask your dentist/hygienist.
Hope this helps!
