Lie down on your bead, relax all of your muscles, and sink into your bed. Place your hands on your belly. Feel the rising and falling of your belly. Move one hand to your chest. Feel the relative lack of movement of this hand. Continue to breath deeply filling your belly and expanding your ribs to the sides without moving the hand on your chest.
After doing this process for a few nights before bed, go through the process while standing. Once you have the knack of breathing from your belly and ribs without moving your upper chest, you will be breathing correctly to carry long notes and sing well.
Well, at least depending on your tone, timing, and the words of the songs, you will sing well.

I think this all depends on what kind of music you are singing... If you are in tune, have a steady vibrato and have enough "air" to take you through the lines you are trying to sing while not feeling any discomfort or excessive fatige (this means woofiness, breathiness or soreness when you are done singing), you may actually be singing well, naturally. There are many singers in the pop/folk industry that have wonderful voices who have found a vocal technique that works for them on their own. If you want to specialize, (like opera or musical theater, etc.) you will really have to find a good voice teacher because the demands on the voice are simply greater in these industries... be careful with voice coaches... many of us in the opera industry have horror stories of bad technique being taught and make sure it is someone who understands the style you want to sing in! Good Luck!

Place your hand just below your breastbone. Does that expand as you breathe, or is your breath in your chest? Breathe through your diaphragm/stomach, not your chest--the way you do when you sleep. Sing from deep within you, in other words.
Take music lessons at your school. Get in choir if they have one. It will help a lot. If you ever get up the dinero to get a vocal coach--it sucks, I know, I had a $40/lesson one once!--DO IT! Many good ones will only charge $15/lesson. Good luck!

If you haven't taken lessons, you are not singing "correctly." I am sorry, it is just the facts of life. It takes many many years and many many lessons with fantastic teachers to learn how to sing "correctly." If you are serious about making a career about singing, or learning how to sing correctly and make the most out of your natural voice, you must take lessons.
So basically, no. You are not singing correctly simply because you are uneducated. I don't want that to sound mean, its just the truth! Singing isn't something people can just open their mouth and start doing, it is a very complicated act involving control over involuntary muscles (I know, its weird).
