Those who are not passionate about anything would be the ones to say we should all just get along. One would have to be a "milk toast" a "push over" "convictionless" to think debate is a bad thing. There is nothing more important than what one believes. Those who wish to do away with debate only need to accept the beliefs of those they disagree with, then all would be well with the world.

they are not afraid, but it is easier to argue than debate rationally.

Maybe because there is no winning the debate. Nobody has all the answers. There is no "beyond a shadow of a doubt" proof. That is why it is called faith. Everyone comes to believe the way they do for a reason and unfortunatly it seems that alot of the people here have already made up their minds about things and really only want to argue because they have been hurt in one way or another by the church. But to debate this issue is a waste of time. There is never any winner. In the Bible it says we walk by faith and not by sight. If God gave us all the answers it would not take any faith to believe. As for me, I cannot look at nature or fathom the child growing inside of me without thinking " how could there not be a God?" Could this all have really happened on it's own or by accident? I think it takes more faith to believe there isn't a God than that there is. Anyway, I also think alot of people do believe there is a God but they don't like Him very much because of the Christians on this planet that have done such a miserable job in representing Him. But we need to remember that people are only human and are sinners. I personally believe that no one has the right to force thier beliefs on another person and that if we really believe what we say we believe, we should simply be living it and letting our lives tell the truths that we believe. The church has made so many mistakes in history and is still making them. It is very unfortunate, but I try not to judge them, but to pray for them, or else I am a hypocrite.

they might be afraid of debate because they cant stand competition better than theirs. they also might be afraid of being proved wrong or losing. its a normal thing. i get into heated debates all the time. especially being in high school,i have joined the straight/gay alliance club and theres always the debate with me being christian and being . most of the time they lose but i have also had my fair share.so opinions are always important to a debate. some people also have the problem with not knowing what they are talking about therefore when they rack up the conversation, and then they have a debate on their hands and dont know what to do because they have nothing to back them up. so mainly...they are afraid to LOSE!!!

True, but to a point.
Debate is discussing your opinions passionately and politely in an organized forum where consideration that others might have a good point.
Argueing is having no respect for anothers opinion, rudely forcing your views upon them or shouting them down, convinced that you are right.
It's ironic that you chose this forum, because (besides Politics) this is the least polite of all the catagories (probably due to the inability of anyone to prove their correctness).

Agreed. I am passionate about speaking my mind in a constructive way. I rarely agree with anybody. I never agree with anybody 100% on any issue and I refuse to conform. I do try very hard to see things from others perspective (even if they are dead wrong-tee he)

Maybe its not the debating - its the manner and behavior of the conversationalist they object to.

Sike, I have met few people without convictions and would not stand up for anything. Maybe they won't stand up for what you believe perhaps.
