You can go to a support group to help you cope, but you can't fix your father. Get all your assets, your college fund, everything, in your name where he can't touch them again. You're lucky you're only out $1000, some people lose $100,000's to this nastiness.

You can sit your family down with an intervention specialist and let him explain why they have to get off their collective asses and do something. Then as a group you confront your father, not just you, ok?

When he loses his house, his job, his family, and sometimes even the clothes he's wearing, he might realize he has a problem and get help on his own.

Addiction is a terrible problem for families no matter what the hook, it takes a group effort to fix it. Good luck, hon, all you can do is protect your property and keep your sanity.

http://www.gam-anon.org

I found this site through the Gambler's Anonymous website, and I think you should get in touch with them.

Unfortunately, there's really not much you can do to stop your dad from gambling. People with addictions often have to hit rock bottom before they realize they need help. He has to be the one to ask for help.

What you can do in the meantime is find help for yourself to cope with your father's problem. Try and get your other family members to get involved in this group with you. These programs can be incredibly helpful in learning to handle things that are out of your control.

Good luck!
