There are two ways of numbering the Commandments. In the Lutheran Church, the list is:
1) You shall have no other gods before me (combines your numbers 1 and 2)
2) You must not misuse the name of God
3) Remember the sabbath...
4) Honor ma and pa...
5) You shall not murder.
etc.
9) You must not desire your neighbor's house ....(so that we will not attempt to trick our neighbor out of his inheritance or house, take it by pretending to have a right to it, etc. but help him to keep & improve it)
10) You must not desire your neighbor's wife, servant, maid, animals or anything that belongs to him ...(so that we will not release his cattle, take his employees from him or seduce his wife, but urge them to stay and do what they ought to do.)

The first three deal with relationship to God
The fourth deals with relationship to family
The rest (perhaps in order of importance?) deal with relationships to other people.

These 3 themes (God, family, culture) were of primary importance in the Old Testament. You can easily see them in the Apocraphal book of Tobit.

The commandment's have always seemed a bit out of date to me, I would have thought 'You must not kill' would have been more of a priority than the top five commandment's, I don't want to be disrespectful but sometimes I think God was a little bit vain to have himself at the top of the list and not murder first, as for the 'Your wife belongs to you', bit, me and my husband have had many a laugh over that one, when we got married the vicar gave the marriage certificate to me and said I was in charge of it as now I was a married woman I would have to prove I was to banks, doctors ect, so I say to him I own you and have a certificate to prove it, the vicar gave it to me and not you, the commandment's are old fashioned and out of date but I suppose if God wants them changing he will make sure it happens.

The order was decided by God not man. If one thinks there should be a different order; that person can take it up with the one that made the order; God.

Might be cuz its not as important as loving & respecting god and your parents. Tell me wouldn't you kill someone who killed your parents? I think you would. I don't know would you? I would!
