I heard there is a box or something that is worshipped, and that is why Muslims bow/pray towards Mecca. Correct my ignorance if there is any, but why do they pray towards Mecca and whats so special about this place?

In the early history of Islam, Muslims prayed toward the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Later, when relations between Muslims and Jews had soured a bit, lo and behold, Mohammed suddenly got a revelation that the direction of prayer was to be a building called the Ka'aba in Mecca. According to Muslim legend, the Ka'aba dates back to Abraham or even Adam, and was the first building ever dedicated to God. At the time of Mohammed's birth, it was a pagan temple.

Muslims pray at Mecca because that is where the origin of Islam comes from. Muhammad started Islam, which is the religion of the Muslims. In 620, Muhammad and his followers fled to Medina and then in 630? he conquered Mecca again and banned worship of the old gods. 2 years later, he died in Mecca. Thats why Mecca is so important to Muslims.

The Holy City of Makkah, which lies inland 73 kilometers east of Jiddah, is the place where the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was born - the place where God's message was first revealed to him and the city to which he returned after the migration to Madinah in 622 AD.

Makkah is the holiest city on earth to Muslims. Five times each day, the world's one billion Muslims, wherever they may be, turn to the Holy City of Makkah to pray. And at least once in their lives, all Muslims who are not prevented by personal circumstance perform the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Makkah. Thus each year the Holy City of Makkah is host to some two million hajjis (pilgrims) from all over the world.

The Holy Mosque in Makkah houses the Ka'aba, in the corner of which is set the Black Stone which marks the starting point for the seven circumambulations of the Holy Mosque which every hajji must complete.

The Ka'aba ia in Mecca. I believe it is where God first spoke to Abraham (SAW) which makes it very Holy. it is also where the Prophet Muhammad(SAW) cleared the Kaaba of all other Gods worshipped there, and declared the God of Abraham (SAW) to be the only God without partners. This is why we pray toward Mecca...

3:96. Lo! the first Sanctuary appointed for mankind was that at Mecca, a blessed place, a guidance to the peoples;
97. Wherein are plain memorials (of Allah's guidance); the place where Abraham stood up to pray; and whosoever
entereth it is safe. And pilgrimage to the House is a duty unto Allah for mankind, for him who can find a way thither.
As for him who disbelieveth, (let him know that) Lo! Allah is Independent of (all) creatures.

Mecca is the capital city of Makkah province in Saudi Arabia. It is the birthplace of their prophet, Muhammed. Muslims are required to make at least one pilgrimage in their lifetime. They regard the al-Masjida al Haram (The Sacred Mosque) as the holiest site for Islam;as it was designated by Muhammed in the Torah or Qu'ran.
