Why the bad rep. for labradoodles? Is it because of the high price? I have the opportunity to adopt from an animal shelter; I'm not paying $800 plus.

The bad reputation comes more from the unethical breeders who routinely lie in order to market their designer dogs. I've heard some doozies from 'dd' breeders - most claim the dogs are hypoallergenic (not), low-shedding (not if it takes after the lab side!) and healthier than a pure bred due to hybrid vigor (big no!) but also that they are low energy, don't slobber, are 'too smart' to have an accident in the house, etc. As long as you realize that the dog you are adopting is a (gasp) dog you should be ok :-)

I think Labradoodles may have gotten a 'bad rap' because folks breeding them without much knowledge have spread misinformation about them. As an example, some people advertise Labradoodles as non-shedding and low-allergy, and some are. If you are applying those descriptions to the 2nd generation of the hybrid and higher, it is true. However, it IS NOT true of the first generation (a cross between a purebred Lab and purebred Poodle). But those qualities are being advertised by some people breeding that generation, and then people are finding out, too late, after they have gotten one, that they have been mislead.

If you do not have allergies, and don't mind some shedding, a first generation cross can make a nice family pet. And they do USUALLY shed a bit less than a Lab.

They don't have a bad reputation as such. The bad rep goes to the "breeders" who breed them. The reason is that they are NOT a breed but rather are nothing more then a high priced mutt with a silly name.
Adopting a lab/poodle mix from a shelter is wonderful. There are tons of wonderful mixes waiting for homes in shelters.

I don't know as if they have a bad reputation. It is funny how they were SO expensive a few years ago and now people are having a hard time giving them away.
This is the way of fad mutts. They do not become the big thing people thought they would!!!!!!'If you like the dog, and can get it from a shelter. go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well pure bred breeders are disgusted with them b/c it gose against what they breed for they see them as high priced mutts ...other than that maybe b/c they are big and goofey for a few years and they are smart and can be callenging at times...and require expensive grooming or you can do it your self but it is time consuming b/c of the poodle part ....their hair require at least a lot of brushing and sometimes the hair to be cut too... which can range 50-100 dollars on a regular basis...but they are also healty, smart, sweet and usually mature to be great dogs!!! good luck i hope you have the money, time and patience to adopt the labradoodle :)

I think they have a bad rep because there have been some poor breeding practices. They are expensive because they are a new breed and in demand.

you are low on $800.00! Sites I have checked out are 1500 to 2500 dollars depending on the "type"( size) of labradoodle you get
Check out the site from Australia below. This is where the breed started.
They really are cute dogs!

i think the bad rep is because they are mutts with a fancy name that people are paying a insane amount of money for them...but if you are adopting one go you! but you have to know that you HAVE to train them because they have a LOT of energy and it can be very hard to control because they are pretty big dogs.

I've only heard great things about them (high price aside.) Plus, if you get one with poodle hair as opposed to lab fur, you don't have to worry about allergies....I'd go for it if I were you. Dogs add so much to your life!
