I am throwing a party and would like to get some cheap wine. I don't really drink wine so I need some help. I see the grocery ads here in San Diego and I see all kinds of cheap wine. I also go to CostCo and see all kinds. What 3-4 kinds of wine should I get? And if even I can get a certain wine maker would be really helpful too! Thanks in advance

I personally find excellent bargains at Trader Joe's. Their staff have regular tastings and then post the results on the various bottles. (not a bad job eh? ). I have found GREAT wines there at a fraction of the cost of a 'name brand/popular wine. I know Costco sells good wines too, but the are mostly expensive 'high end' wines. Australian 'Yellow Tail' is another underrated gem. Australian wines have come a long way in the last 20 years, same with Washington wines. Enjoy what you like is always the best advice.

Trader Joe's rules for good cheap wine, just look toward the bottom shelves, I've tried several of their less expensive red wines (in particular Merlot, Bear's Lair is awesome and only like 4 bucks a bottle) and haven't had a bad one yet. Reds are a little easier than whites to go cheap on, especially Merlot. Good luck and have fun. You could always ask that every guest bring their favorite wine and have a wine tasting. That way, you could buy a few bottles to drink after everyone's personal stash is gone and you could taste several wines and pick your favorite. Just get the basics, a few bottles of Chardonay, a few of Merlot, a few Cabernet's then you're set.

I just checked and Costco carries two affordable but good brands, Yellow Tail and Red Truck. Get a couple of bottles of white (chardonnay, savignon blanc, etc.) and a couple of reds (Shiraz, syrah, zinfandel, merlot)

Also, your supermarket will have two widely carried brands, Chateau St. Michelle and Columbia Crest at under $10 a bottle in both white and red that's decent.

No one will laugh at you for any of these selections.

Cheaper than that........ there's the big bottle wines and then the really cheap box wines, but I really would not go to boxes personally....this boxed stuff is overly sweetened and it's really just guzzling wine for high school girls that won't drink keg beer and people that don't know any better (sorry ladies!).

If your guest are in their 20s, go for the big bottles of chardonnay and white zinfandel (which is pink), that's what college girls drink.

If your guests are 30 and older or more sophisticated, go with my first suggestions.....

Also, World Market carries some good inexpensive wines that you don't see anywhere else......try a few of those and everyone will be impressed.

If you have a Trader Joe's nearby go there for sure. They have a huge wine selection and they are very, very reasonably priced. I would recommend the Charles Shaw Chardonnay, seriously like $3 a bottle, but it is good. Also I am very fond of the Barefoot White Zinfandel that they have there. Trader Joe's is the place to go for sure. They personally try all the items they carry. Also the people who work there are generally very knowledgeable and helpful!

If your not throwing a fancy party, most box wine, like franzia etc. is fine tasting to most people. You could go for a box of each, white, pink and red, but again, if your not trying to impress wine snobs, id go with white zinfindal(pink) - it tastes like juice, kind of, more people are apt to like it.
ALso, rose with an accent on the e rose, if making a stand as the new hip drink, like the cosmo was. There was a NY times article about this 2 weeks ago.
You could point that out.

go to the food and wine online site:
http://www.foodandwine.com/wine/

Under the section "Find the perfect bottle of wine"
click on the choices of price.
click on the "$"... which means the cheapest.
click search for wines.
Where it says "rating"
click the arrow button or link.

So that this way you can see which cheap wines are good, and print the list with you, and go to a wine store or costco like you said and find it, plus there is a costco website online:
http://www.costco.com/
check out the wines from there

Go to Trader Joes and get Charles Shaw. A case of Chardonnay and a case of Merlot. $1.99 a bottle. Or mix up the Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot.

If you're looking for something affordable, but classy, check out the following site. They have some good selections starting at about $10/bottle.
