I quit my full-time job in March when my second daughter was born. A neighbor asked me to consider watching her 7 month old son as she is losing her sitter. The money would help and I could still be home with my kids, but I am concerned about legal issues (Kids get hurt! especially kids learning to walk), differences in behavior expectations, etc. Is it worth the hassle? If so, does anyone have any advice on how to cover my bases in advance?

My advice is to speak to a lawyer and the best, most inexpensive way to do this is through Pre-Paid Legal Services. For more information visit the website below, and feel free to contact me through that site if you have further questions on how this service may be able to help you. I encourage you to find out what your rights and options are in this situation.

I wish you the best of luck.

I had this dilema when I had my first daughter, my mother got me a sitting job for two little boys during the day for extra money. I ended up turning it down because all though the money would of been good, there were no guarentees that things would go smoothly. I'm not good at disiplining other peoples children and it would scare me with the child was to get hurt and I would be sued. It all about how you feel. If you feel you can handle it then by all means take it on temporarly, letting the mother know that this is a trial period and if you see that it's going well then you'll keep doing it. My only suggestion would be if you live in an apartment get renters insurance because if the little one gets hurt the insurance will cover court isssues just incase. If in a home review your home issurance policy. And remember it's all about how you feel, not about how we feel.

Talk to the mom. What are her feelings about what she would like? How comfortable are you with a 7 month old? Is your house kid proof enough? How do you think YOUR kids will respond to another kid in the house?

I have included a website for legal issues associated with babysitting.

Call a day care center. Ask them the question you want answered . They will help. I have. friends working in several. You might want a background check on them. Good Luck. I love children, but in today society I would not do it. Only for family. Also I would ask for the medical history of the child. Can't be too careful.

Most parents don't sue when their kid falls while being a toddler,, as long as like the kid wasn't kicked into the table he/she hit,, but one thing you need to consider is cleanliness.

Do the parents wash their hands frequently or do they pass workplace and other germs all over their kids to pass to yours?

I watched my friends kid while she'd travel as short of a distance to a friggen wal mart,, and the wench would pass disease to her kid which would inturn place a disease curse on my household!

If you have a strong immune system and the person is clean, by all means watch the kid,, but if the kid always has snot running down their face and mom and dad are slobs,, dont do it,, and don't allow them to visit your home either!

Thats not a bad idea,I think. But you need to be sure the parents will support what you do with the child, and yes be sure they have good hygiene.Talk it over with them on how you have a routine and that their child will be involved. And also let them know not to bring him/her if he/she is sick.Every parent knows that with learning how to walk there will be tumbles with bruises. But do tell them at the end of each day if and when the child got hurt. Thats what my babysitter does, and I support that. Hopefully it works out.
