The European Union was primarily set up to remove trade barriers and other economic barriers between the countries that share the continent. A similar change in unifying the North American continent would not be especially advantageous, especially after NAFTA. While the majority of our trade does occur to the North with Canada, Canadians would likely not be happy about pegging their currency as it continues to strengthen against the dollar.

People complain about the U.S. Government, our economy, our Constitution, etc, but you may have noticed that people are moving here from Mexico in droves and very few Americans are moving there. Furthermore, it's doubtful that Canada wants to be lumped in with us and Mexico as one big Federal State. Mexico's economy is a shambles, due to corruption and lack of incentive (if it were viable, their hardworking people would stay there) and Canada's economy is rather small (they have less than 10% of our populations). There would be a massive migration north and everyone who lives in the US and Canada now would be poorer.

But lets say that we did have a North American Union, whose Constitution would we live by? I would not want to live under Mexico's or Canada (did you know that Queen Elizabeth is the head of State in Canada Source: CIA Fact Book, www.cia.gov). But even if we lived under the current US Constitution, Canada would be a medium size state or 5 really small ones and Mexico would dominate the US House of Representatives and probably the Presidency. It would not be a good idea.

The USA should maintain its borders and lets face in none of the other countries in North American like the United States would care to give up it's soverign rights. Considering the political nature of other countries in North America it would probably mean greater taxes for me - not something I would care for.

That's a no-brainer considering what countries are on our continent....we should seal our borders down and cut the dead weight...aka Canada...and mexico..what would we really gain by opening up our borders...or maybe your suggesting you would just like to give away everything we have here!!!

America has nothing to gain and everything to lose. I don't see what the other countries can bring to the table that is beneficial.
