Being able to read means you have access to unlimited information, through the library, the internet, newspapers, etc. Therefore, it's "food" for the brain, by being one of the best means for the brain to learn.

Well it would help if you wrote a complete sentence. But reading is indeed food for the brain. If you have the $ and time to travel all over the world and speak to people in every profession then you might not need to read as much. Reading offers you history which is what any society is based on. It also offers you the tools to look up any profession or fact and do your own research. This then gives you a rich knowledge base with which to face the world.

Believe it or not, it IS good for the brain.

Studies show that Alzheimer's does not affect some people that continue to read daily.

I know for a fact, that when I do NOT read (novels, etc. not just crap on the computer...) my memory gets worse. I forget more things, and I cannot retain memory for long.

But, when I DO start reading again, it's like my brain wakes up, and I remember all sorts of things!

Good luck!

IT DEPENDS reading could make you smarter it depends on what content it has if you already know these words and these facts and stuff it doesn't really feed your brain but if it's something new your reading and have no idea you search it up what it is you learn something new and that's exercising your brain and making YOU SMARTER :)

As you read, the information that's read gets planted in your memory... As you actually USE that information, it gets reinforced and is thereby more easily remembered, that is to say: learned...

Example: What's 12²? 144, right? Well, come with me to the warehouse where many things come in that quantity... OK, here's today's stuff that came in... Hmmm, 12 cases of glass vases... Uh-oh... 4 are crushed! How many good vases needed to be paid for? Well, if you never learned your times table, you'd have to start counting the good vases... Before that, you would have to learn how to count... Before that, you would have to learn what a vase is... Get the idea...?

What about all the textbooks you read...? They teach you ALL kinds of stuff...! Reading exposes you to many, many different things, but THINKING is how you learn as you connect concept to concept, and thereby, become smarter...

Besides exercising your brain, you learn a lot by reading. Try to read a variety of different subjects. It'll make you a more intelligent and more interesting person.

Reading increases your knowledge faster than anything else can. And the more you read the more your ability to cope with things will increase.
That will at least make you appear to be smarter. You'll be sitting there saying 'duh' less often than before.
It'll also teach you to think better, since thinking is one of those things that gets better with exercise, and reading and thinking about what you are reading will be that exercise.

Well, I read a lot and I have a 4.0 GPA... reading doesn't actually make you smarter, but it does open your mind to new things. It makes you more tolerant, understanding, and openminded... well, that's what it did for me. Also, it increased my vocabulary and exposed me to new styles of writing.
