I would not know, I was not brought up in a religion. I am an engineer by training and a Christian by logical study of the Bible.

No, I don't believe it is, especially if a child is raised to respect other religions as well as their own. It's when the parents try to convince the child that "everyone else is wrong except for us" that it becomes like brainwashing. It's basically like telling a child that everyone should be alike, which in a sense IS brainwashing.

I don't think so. I was raised in a Christian church by a family of very religious people--many of my cousins are now preachers. I am firmly NOT a Christian now, nor a believer in any other religion. People should take the time to learn on their own about the religion they were raised in, as well as all the other ones. Only then can they really know what they believe.

I think so. My mother was a little Jewish girl of 8 when her parents moved south in the depression and fought all the way. They dropped the 6 children off at a catholic orphanage and went their separate ways. These six jewish kids went through hell until they were 18 and could never shake the catholic programming for the rest of their lives. I always had to feel sorry for my own mother.

brainwashing is where a person is coerced into taking on board someone elses ideas even if they have never thought about the issues for themselves or not

if you find that you have identical ideas and thoughts to your parents - then brainwashing maybe

if you find that you think entirely differently to your parents - that could be a rebellious stage you are going tho (an inverted 'brainwashing')

if you find that you broadly agree but have a few differences on less major issues then i could say that no you are not being brainwashed

as a christian and a parent then i would be encouraging my son (now 8) to be a believer as both his parents are but to think and work stuff out for himself as he goes along based on the principles we are helping to lay down with him. I see that the bible has a lot of great principles but being a christian isn't about being taught WHAT to think more HOW to think.

I have been brainwashed. Through years of shock therapy and western education I have committed heresy and actually (gasp) questioned my parents faith. Even still, some of the beliefs do make sense. I keep the parts I like and throw away the rest. Truth is truth regardless of the source.

brainwashing can only happen to people who are dumb. i am a Christian, and i've got post-graduate qualifications. yes, in the plural form (oh, that means more than ONE). so, if i wasnt brainwashed, by virtue of me being an intelligent individual...where does that leave you? society will tell you what you shouldnt believe because they dont want to make the effort to care about others and invest in love, as I do as a Christian. so, they make up all sorts of lies and untruths to help them feel better about their empty purposeless existence, you can let them brainwash you, it doesnt require much intelligence...

Having the beliefs or opinions of another person forced upon you until you abandon any hope of forming your own opinions or having freedom of will?

Sounds like brainwashing to me.

In a sense, yes. But everything you experience in your upbringing is a form of brainwashing. Truth is subjective. It is both existent and non-existent.
