Boy, would I have liked to know the answer to that when I was at school.

I did two compulsory years of it and learned that I would rather do absolutely anything else instead. Later, I learned German and I'll answer from the perspective of that and generalise it to be about learning a foreign language. (I stiil can't speak any French)

I agree with Karin about it (learning a foreign language) helping your English language skills enormously. I also think it improves your appreciation of almost everything else, too. To use a foreign language it is necessary to take on a slightly foreign attitude and perspective of what you're talking about to express yourself correctly. That fundamental skill will help in all kinds of problem solving and just makes you a more sophisticated person. I can't say for sure, but I think learning a foreign language probably bumps up your IQ. I can't think of any other subject that might do that.

Do you actually "need" to learn French? I'm not sure if I "need" to do it, but I actually enjoy learning the language.

OK, but if you want "reasons" to learn French, check this links:

There are very important authors that wrote in french: Camus, Rimbaud, Guy de Maupassant, etc, that is one reason why people learn french, to enjoy french literature better. Another reason is that French is one of the most spoken languages in the world. Another reason is that there are areas of knowledge where french is important as philosophy and anthopology. The reason why I learnt french is because it is a beautiful language and very enjoyable. I hope you give french a chance to make your life richer.

Back in my college days I thought it made me more "cultural" and fashionable, and "cool", and "sexy". Now, a bit over 35 years later, after I've lived in the world and seen the French nation operate, I can't see one damn reason why we need to know they're language. And if they've written anything worth a damn, they can translate it into English if they want an audience or market. God Bless you.
