And the point of holding a grudge?? What good does it do for you to be mad and uptight over a hurt? Is letting go a good thing? Does it relieve you from the pressure of having to be a grudge bearer? Sure it does.
When you forgive, it is not just a matter of saying "I forgive you." You do it on a basis of "I have made mistakes also." "I have purposely hurt people, also." "I have carried a grudge also." You forgive on the basis of "there, but for the grace of God, go I." You could be in their shoes, and you WERE, were you not? You have hurt people. You have made people feel bad.
Christian teaching, btw, does not "dictate." You cannot dictate to volunteers! We choose to be christian because the ideas of God work and make sense. It is stated on this basis..we forgive because we too seek forgiveness.
Recall the parable of the king who demanded his money from a man which had been given a loan? The king threatened to put his family in debtor prison. The man begged for mercy and the king being merciful, CANCELLED out the debt and allowed him to go free. But the man left the court and when he saw someone who owed HIM money, he took him by the throat and demanded the money. When the man could not repay, the only result would be prison. Another person witnessed this and told the King. The King had that man cast out for his wretched behaviour.
What do you learn from this? You want YOUR transgressions forgiven...and then you go out from that forgiveness and mercy and take another person by the throat for offending YOU? Jesus died for your sins and forgave you..and then we hold a grudge against someone! No, that will not fly with God.

Forgiving people no matter what they do (if you truely mean forgiveness for them) should make you feel a lot better even though after they have hurt you you are very hurt and forgiveness may seem far from you mind. It helps if they apologize and MEAN IT.

We need to forgive, but remember forgiveness and trust r 2 different things. I think of it this way when someone hurts you its like someone putting a hot peice of metal in your hand. (It hurts and burns) The longer anf harder you told onto that peice of hot metal (the hurt) the more it hurts and burns u. You forgive to allow healing to take place in your life, its got nothing to do with the other person who hurt u.

Forgiveness offers a heavenly sense of peace. Learning to close the book on hurt is a virtue worthy of pursuing.

Forgiveness was one of the hardest things for me to understand and do when I became a Christian. I fought with it for a long time but once I was able to do if I felt so free so happy and I could let go of alot of things from my past.

Bad at first but good in the long run. Having all that anger inside you isn't doing you any good, and it isn't hurting back the person who hurt you, so its better to forgive hard as it is.

It makes me feel good. I used to not forgive very easily and found that it often then turns to hate and hate is a great burden to bear. Now it is easy for me to forgive and I feel much better. I do it for myself as much as for the other person.

Good, becaue it releases the hurt and anger and allows me to be free. Not forgiving someone only makes you a prisoner to the hurt they caused you. Forgivness sets you free.

i think it's not easy at first, and by no means should you forgive in a way that says, "i think you did nothing wrong! let's hang out so you can treat me like crap again!" but it does feel much better in the long run. like others have said, it frees you from the pain and hatred that would just make you bitter and untrusting of others.

It may not feel good to forgive at first, but in the long run it feels better to forgive.
