Study the writings of St Augustine. He started out as a pagan, but then was converted, and wrote many discussions of the early church. He was the Bishop in what is now Egypt (he was African).

One of his writings is on the Sermon on the Mount (very beautiful), and another is "The City of God".

The Book of Mormon. You can find a lot of the same type of material and interesting stuff you just read about. Especially try the writings of Nephi (Nephi 1 and 2)
