I agree with you. Muffins used to be more like bread. They were cornmeal or plain, maybe blue berry..but now they are chocolate chip, cream cheese, lots of sugar. I think you need to look at the ingredients for each type individually. Cupcakes usually have frosting, muffins don't.

Maybe I don't know, but I thought cupcakes usually had frosting whereas muffins are mixed with raisins, cranberries, or chocolate chips, or nothing at all.

Cupcakes are fluffier and are frosted. Muffins are denser and additional products are added, ie. cornmeal, bran, blueberries, etc.
