They said waikiki is pretty much close to everything, but I'm wondering if I'm going to need a rent a car to check out all the sites? I'm only going to be there for 3 days.

The island of Oahu is much bigger than it seems you're thinking.

In Waikiki, you've pretty much got pretty beaches and a zoo. If you're wanting to do anything like visit Pearl Harbor or the beautiful North Shore, you'll definitely need a car.

No.
Oahu has a wonderful public transportation system. Simple call The Bus.
You can even get from the airport to Waikiki on the Bus.
You go get to just about any place you might want to see by THE BUS
Circle the Island, see the North Shore, visit Pearl Harbor, Sea Life Park, Diamond Head. And many other sites of interest.

If you do not know your way around? A car can be a real pain. Parking is very hard at times to find, and also expense.. Even the Hotels charge you to park.

So come to Hawaii, relax and have fun

If you had more time, I'd suggest renting a bicycle and going around the island like that. But since you only have 3 days, by all means, get a car. There's lots to do around Waikiki and Honolulu, but there's great stuff all over the island. You'd either need a car or take the public transportation, it's really good. But get out of Honolulu if you can. See some great sights. Check out the Polynesian Cultural Center, northeast side of O'ahu.

It depends on where you want to go and how much money you want to spend. If you would like to venture off the beaten path, for example go on nature hikes and visit beaches without tourists, then you will need a car. If you plan to do a lot of tours with companies, then they usually do hotel pick ups from Waikiki for free.

While the bus system is extensive, it takes a long time to get anywhere and is expensive ($2 per ride). It is also a but complicated to find out how to get from one place to another, unless you have someone that already knows tell you which bus to take. I'd recommend a car before using the bus.

I paid $150 for renting (7 days) a car in the very low season. That gives you a lot of freedom to spend your time somewhere where you feel attracted. If you use the buses, that is very inexpensive as well. In my first trip, I did the round trip of the Island in some 3 hours (or more) for the price of a single ticket. If you don't have a car, you don't have to be worry about a break-in or accident.

If you know exactly the best beaches and spots to go, some patience and buses will be enough.

The Bus is good if you have a lot of time, I would just rent the car. The island looks small but North shore is a good hours drive from Waikiki.

Its continuously superb to have a automobile so which you would be able to get out and bypass and do what you have chose, the place you have chose, once you have chose, yet do you have chose a automobile to delight in Oahu? nicely, Honolulu does have an stunning bus equipment, yet no longer all human beings enjoys taking buses. the downside to having a automobile isn't finding parking at places you have chose to vist, whether some seashores do get incredibly filled up, its having to pay to park your automobile at your hotel. almost each and all the lodges value extra for parking...whether you're staying there. What you may evaluate doing is identifying the place you have chose to bypass and which of those places require a automobile which you will get there, then hire a automobile in basic terms for the day and cut back your automobile condo expenses...and not would desire to undertaking approximately parking at night! There are automobile leases places placed surprising in Waikiki, if that's the place you're staying. some factors of interest even sell applications that incorporate transportation to and from Waikiki, so look at that, too.

Yes, I lived there for 2 years '66-68.
But to be honest, the most beautiful parts of Oahu are behind chain linked, barbed wire fences of the military bases.
Yes, by all means, get a car, the view is unbelievable.
