I am going to give food out to homeless/needy people in the Sacramento area. I have a partner and called the city to make sure no permits where necessary. What should I make them that's not too expensive but something that they will enjoy?

My husband was involved with this kind of work for many years.

We used to give soup, bread, crisps, apples, and some cake.
We would also take out coffee and tea.
Bottles of water also because many of them drink alcohol heavily, which dehydrates the body,

God bless you in this wonderful work

I think that is very nice of you. My thoughts are that you should give them something that they can keep for a while. I mean you don't want to bring them a hot meal if they have already eaten at a shelter or something. Maybe if you made up some bags with a variety of snacks or something that they could eat when they needed something - that might be what they would like. Everyone starts getting on this kick about giving them healthy things. That's all good and everything, but when you are hungry it isn't exactly important if there is some trans fat in your meal. I just think having something to hang onto (when you aren't out there handing food out) is the best bet. McDonald's has those small (like $1) gift certificates you could give them. Oh, and water is always a good idea.

Baked Potatoes with all the works... That might be too messy...
Ramen... add a lot of meat and vegetables... I'm a poor college student and I enjoy that... it is not very expensive.

How to Make:
Take the ramen noodles and boil them till soft. take the frozen mixed vegetables and put them in a wok or big pan cook with sesame oil and soy sauce. In a different pan cook the meat with soy sauce and oyster sauce and sesame oil, until fully done. (I forgot to add you fry the noodles in a pan with some sesame oil, I use the one that cooked the vegetables) Mix all together , taste... add sesame oil and other sauces as needed then serve.

(What to serve in, go to a place like Cash And Carrie, buy some of those containers for leftovers )

Yummy, I'm getting hungry now.

i am homeless and i would like a hamburger or a pizza -
anything nutricious. but the best you could do is go out
and do them right - treat them as people - many times we get treated as the scum of the earth and even the ministries give us 2 or 3 day old food. fresh food shows you care as much as giving the best kinds of food.
go for it man.

Non-perishable that way they can keep it for long periods of time. Check out like dollar stores and low price super markets. Don't make anything that can spoil easily like melted cheese or mayonaise. Good Luck!

Something they can save and eat later comes to mind. Stay away from allergens (peanuts, fish). Prepackaged is good but expensive.

Will this be eaten onsite (e.g, hot meals) or carried away?

Nutritious is good, too.

Hot chicken noodle soup, grilled cheese and the word of God. All served with a side of generosity and a smile.

Make them something with pasta and meat not too expensive. Or you can make a vegetable soup or beef stew.
