Do you think it does detrimental damge for someone who is held back at grade in the early stages of life? I was watching "Everybody Loves Raymond" yesterday and they had an episode where one of his children, his twin son, Micheal was getting held back another year from kindergarten. However, his bro was moving up. What r your thoughts on this? Oh and if you're a teacher, I'd espeically like your input on this.

Forcing a promotion before a child is ready is likely to cause them to get lost in the next grade, frustrated and give feelings of failure and loss of self worth. Holding a child back could make them the target of ridicule by their peers, give them feelings of failure and loss of self worth. It depends on how it is handled by the parent, the child, the teacher and the school.

I'd have to say it depends on how the child perceives it. If they're told that they're being held back because they're incompentent, then it would be detrimental to them. I think at an early enough age they might not get how the system works or may be told in a way that they don't think that it's happening because of their lack of ability.

I'm sure being "held back" is not fun, but neither is always being the class dummy because you missed knowledge way back and learning is based on past info. There is a lot of life after school...it would be better to be prepared for it.

Just because a child is held back a grade doesn't mean they ride the short-bus to school the following year.

No.. most times they don't care. It happens all the time.. It's more damaging to advance a child who cannot grasps the material. He'll only slip farther behind. Better to instill the fundamentals for anothr year to ensure future sucess.

I know 2 poeple that got held back. They are fine except that neither of them are really any smarter for it. Plus they are kind of bad kids, but that's not because they got held back. We got high at lunch today, but that's not because we got held back...no they got held back...well..it didn't affect their intelligence...or is it effect..oh well.

NO IM NOT A TEACHER....BUT MINE WAS PROMOTED WITH SUMMER SCHOOL AID AND SYVAN AND SO FORTH....BETTER TO HOLD THEM ONE MORE YEAR UNTIL THE MATERIALS ARE UNDERSTOOD THAN TO PROMOTE A CHILD WHO CLEARLY DOESNT UNDERSTAND HIS BASICS ENOUGH.....IT MAKES IT EASIER TO GO THROUGH THE OTHER GRADES SMOOTHLY.
