Thanks a bunch everyone, It was a bit challenging for me so I wanted to hear someone else's opinion. (This was a question for a history class.) I see that most of you, don't agree with the fact that, he shouldnt, but it could be necessary.

Anyway thanks a lot. :)

Are you a terrorist? Are you doing anything illegal? Do you have kiddie porn on your computer? Did you call someone to arrange a crime? Do you send porn to people via the Internet? All of these things can result in a search warrant and phone tapping. Now I don't think the government wants to listen to me talking to my children and grandchildren but if I was hatching a plot I would be very wary.

I want the government to have all the tools they need to stop terrorism because it would be a terrible thing to see innocent people be harmed on our soil.

But I am struggling with this for I believe that Ben Franklin said it best.

Ben Franklin
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Only if you're Al Qaeda. ;) Why would they *want* to read my email or listen to my phone conversation??? Too much time on their hands if they are doing that. Anyhow, to answer your question, YES, they should be permitted to do so if there is a legitimate governmental purpose, which I believe there is if terrorists are plotting attacks against our country.

it could go either way because if they are trying to do what they did in 9 11 the government need to listen so they could be stop put for most Americans we need to have our rights from the government.

I don't like the idea of reading my e-mails or taping my phone calls. I'm all for more security, but they better have very good reasons for doing so.

Absolutely not! The only reason they may do such is to make sure most people are not terrorists. But they seem to love spying on ordinary people and not focus on the real threats!

No unless they get a warrant and have probable cause to suspect I'm doing something illegal.

Ever heard of the constitution?

sad, some people do not realize that it is being done right now and it not an invasion of rights due to the Patriot Act. That's why I never answer a George Bush question....

Is this why they haven't caught Bin Laden? Too much time
spent listening to us?
Maybe they'll learn something, but it's doubtful.
