Do you think that it is right that Americans have to learn Spanish to speak to illegal immigrants? Or do you think it is right that immigrants should learn English before they become a American?

For over 200 years, Immigrants have learned English when they decided to come to the United States. Many started teaching themselves well before getting on the boat.

Why should Latinos become the exception, when Polish, Russian, German, French and SPANISH immigrants usually learned English eagerly.

If I visit, let alone moved, to another country. You better believe I would try to learn the language. It's just common courtesy.

Like everything else, it's a business decision. Does learning English affect you ability to make a living? If it does, then you'd better learn it. If not, who cares? If a Hispanic immigrant wants something I have, he/she can address me in English, or vice versa. Why do I care if a guy crosses the border at Brownsville and never goes anywhere else speaks English? If he can get by that way, fine.

For the record, many European immigrants did learn basic English, but many also lived in ghetto neighborhoods in New York and elsewhere where the spoke only their native language until the day they died. It happens everywhere in the world. Look it up...

When I see or hear questions like this, I (sometimes) have to wonder about those Americans in our midst - those with everyday vocabularies and ways of stringing sounds together that are sort of 'rap like' .....and many of our youth who pride themselves in speaking various forms of 'text messaging'.....all of which are unintelligible (at least at times) forms of English, and whether this is somehow different than not understanding a person from another culture? Is it really the language we're upset about, or is the language just a tool for complaining about where the people come from. If it was just language, there's ample excuse to round up a sizeable population right here and now....our own bro's, sista's and kids....and put them on a fenced in island somewhere until they can learn a better form of English.

I think that immigrants should have a working knowledge and ability to generally communicate when they become an American. The culture differences are, I'm sure, quite a lot to adjust to and I would think knowing English would make the assimilation easier.

I don't object to learning another language, since it broadens my horizons and allows me to better understand others' culture and heritage.

i have to agree with you on this one . lets think about it for a minute if you want to take over a country , find one as generous as the United States, flood half there population with yours , force them to conform to your language and your customs , and you have taken over without firing a shot. I think they should learn the language , we like to give holidays for different customs, lf you are going to be here to escape your government and change your life , you need to become an American , no double citizen crap your here or your not. so 110% yes they need to learn the English language they need to recognize the American history and they need to denounce there countryman ship for the place they left , GOD BLESS THE U.S.A

What is so special about English?

It is not the flag.

It is not the Pledge of Allegiance.

It is the language of the country we had to fight to get our freedom.

It should be the LAST language we'd wanna speak, right?
