How do I tame my hair?

I'm black and my hair is really thick and long. I don't want to perm it yet, but I can't think of any other hairstyles I can get but twists, cornrows and braids. I have considered dreads, but if someone has a different style I'M LISTENING!

Have you ever thought of a chemical relaxer and maybe some extensions? I have seen some beautiful work with corn rows on the top and sides of the head that blends right inot being hair extension sor the natural hair...
