This might sound weird (most things I say probably do) but I think for most people atheism is a step between faith and faith. By that I mean that many people have a religious convinction until they are faced with too many questions that simply lack logic so they become atheists. They reach a point where they can't believe something that can't be proven. After years or lifetimes of atheism it dawns on them that a creator is the only answer that makes sense and are drawn back into spirituality. Many atheists are always spiritual but lack the belief in a creator behind the scenes but in this scenario that spirituality once again leads them to belief in a deity.

You couldn't be christian; reincarnation goes against christian beliefs. Maybe atheists are "just past the middle"-ers. Deity worshippers are the first-timers.
