Hi evryone, I am recovering from anorexia, But lately when I am really hungry I get sharp pains all through my stomach and I also can get them right after I finish eating. They do not last long and they are not intense to where i need to go to my doctor, but I tend to worry a lot. does anyone no if this is normal? And also I find that with my eating starting to improve I do get a lot of gas?? anyone know if this is normal?

Hi there... CONGRATS on being in recovery. From some of your other questions, it sounds like you have a therapist and nutritionist. These are excellent questions for your nutritionist! :)

In terms of sharp pains....please get this checked! Feeling bloated and uncomfortably full is normal during the re-feeding process, but anything "sharp" and "painful" really should be checked by your MD. (Better safe than sorry!). In terms of the gas, well.....it will pass. :) Almost ALL of my patients experience the same thing as their bodies adjust. Hang in there. I know it's not fun.

Best of luck in recovery, and congrats on how far you've come!

I don't know first hand, but your stomach probably just needs more time to get out of "survival mode" and adjust to your new eating habits. I know Green Tea is really good for you and helps your stomach too, perhaps drink a cup of green tea with your meal and see if it is any better. Talk to your doctor about how long will it take for you to truly recover.

I have a friend who used to have anorexia, and she has intestinal damage from it, decades later she still has severe pain at times and a "slow moving colon". She still sees her doctor for it all this time later. Hopefully yours is not so serious!

Keep up the good progress - don't fall off the wagon!

ok well i'm not an expert but this is what i think. you haven't been eating right because of your anorexia so your body isn't used to the sudden food filling up your stomach which might be why you are getting sharp pains. once you start eating regularly you should be fine. the gas is from the food. certain foods make you more gasey.

If you are recovering from anorexia, you should have a counselor. These are questions you can have her address. If you don't have a counselor, you can have your doctor refer one for you. It occurs to me that your prior eating disorder may have disrupted your digestive system to the point that your symptoms might be a result of your previous starvation and you might need medical help with them, so I urge you to report these symptoms to the doctor. If nothing else, he can put your mind at ease, which would make it worth it.
