I'm looking for a camera for my Photography class. It can't be digital. It needs a shutter speed dial, rewind lever, film advance lever, adjustable lens, and a hot shoe. And I'd rather not buy it over the internet.

Ask at your local camera store. Some of them sell used equipment. Or they might be able to hook you up with someone selling their old equipment, as they deal with photographers every day.

I vote for the Pentax K1000, also. It's a nice, simple camera with nothing more than you need for your class. And, if you want something better afterwards, you might consider switching to a digital SLR.

Even though you don't want to buy online, you can check prices at Ebay. A quick look there suggests you might find a K1000 with a 50mm lens and case for around $100 or less.

If you're in or near a city, try craigslist.org to find someone selling a K1000 locally.

If you buy a used camera, try to shoot and process 1 roll of film before class. Better still if you do this with the former owner and ask whether you can return based on the results.

Checkout a local camera store (not WallyWorld or other department store...a REAL camera store). Look for an old Pentax K1000, or any similar SLR that has manual control (Canon, Nikon, Minolta, etc.). You can still find 'em fairly cheap. Stay away from pawn shops...they sell junk.

I agree with btsmith. The K1000 is an excellent student camera and you will have it for many, many years.

Canon or Minolta, old styles might meet your needs

Get a Canon or Sony, but I'm leaning towards Canon because the SD memory cards they use are the universal standard(cameras, cell phones, camcorders, etc.) while Sony's Memory Stick memory cards are only for Sony products(Sony cameras, PSP, etc.).
