I have noticed that a couple of my friends have had them recently and I wanted to know what they were caused by.

I do not wear make up or get them myself yet I was just wondering what it was caused by because my friends did not know either.

A stye is caused by an infection in the sebaceous (oil producing) or sweat glands in the eyelid. The infection is usually caused by bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus.

* swelling of the eyelid
* redness at the edge of the eyelid
* pain over the affected area (localized pain)
* tenderness

The answer by FullMast is correct...Also if you want to avoid getting stye, change your eye make up (ie:eyeliner, mascara) every 3 months.

there are two major causes

A sty results from an acute infection of the oil glands of the eyelid (meibomian glands) that occurs after these glands have become clogged.

A sty also may arise from an infected hair follicle at the base of an eyelash.
