They have a variety of tricks (primarily one called "cold reading") to make their act seem believable. Michael Shermer has written many articles about their techniques. It also helps that people who go to psychics really want to believe, so they grasp at anything that's even close and totally ignore things that are completely wrong. Basically, they rely on human gullibility and inability to think rationally.

The reason that many psychics don't win lotterys is that the real ones see things like colors (auras) around people.........or get visions that they can not control. They dont just ask a ? and get an answer. Now..this is the real ones (my oldest daughter now 11 being one of them) the people you see on tv are fakes......but there is no denying the help that psychics give on crime sceans........being a law enforcement family...I have seen it first hand

Open to the idea that there is psychic phenomenon and people sensitive to such things, but I don't believe every Tom, Dick, and Harry that claims psychic abilities.

Most of them are frauds, but I cant ignore that there are circumstances and studies that cant be ignored or proven wrong. The possibility is out there to prove they exist, but I dont believe any of them are as powerful and many would like us to believe.

They are all fakes. They usually have a good sense of human nature and can act very dramatically to get people to believe in them.
