I think it is perfectly fine (it is an involuntary reaction after all), as long as you don't sneeze directly ON your friend.

Turn your head down/away (just not into someone else),
cover your mouth with your hand
cover your mouth with a napkin
sneeze into your sleeve

Sneezing isn't in the same category as farting or burping. Proper etiquette is to turn your head away from the person/table and the sneeze around your bicep. Sneezing on hands transmits germs easily from one person to another with the use of utensils, while you're paying the check or handshaking.

Just make sure you turn towards the table next to you and sneeze with a full and open mouth. If you are on a blind date or first date, make sure you sneeze all over her/him.

How do you stop a sneeze from coming on? You can't. Just make sure your mouth and nose are covered.

No, of course not. Keep some tissue in your purse/pocket. When you feel the 'sneeze' coming on cover your mouth; use the tissue and apologize to your friend - "Excuse me" or "Pardon me" is appropriate.
