What you did wasn't right. Just because he was mean to you doesn't mean you need to stoop to his level. Tell him the truth personally but if you're too scared make up an email and send him an anonymous note telling him you're someone he knows and that you're sorry. That way he won't be heartbroken and he'll be warned.

why break it off? I would simply let him know it was me. That way you get your revenge and he will feel like crap.
