Heavy Rail -- Canada's cross county line Excellent service and beautiful countryside.

Metro Rail -- Hands down Washington, DC Metro

Commuter Rail -- New Jersy North line.

Light Rail -- San Jose, CA

At one time I would have included Amtrak but the feds have messed it up so much that it will take $500 billion to bring it up to par again.

Tourist line -- Napa, CA Wine Country Line.

World Wide -- India's rail lines -- all of them truely an amaizing acheivment

Europe All the high speed trains. Each has its own pluses and minuses but all are top notch.

Japan again the rail system as a whole.

China -- their new mag-lev system in Shanghai fantasticly smooth and a fantastic acheivement.

As for maglev Where is the USA ? not even in the planning stages. "Third World country" beets us again

I have to say that I will probably be biased in my answer. The best light rail system I have been on? There is St. Louis, San Diego, Denver, Portland, Sacramento and Los Angeles. I cant difinatively choose a "best" one as each system has it's own unique characteristics. But, as I said, I am biased. I worked on the manufacture of each of them. If I were hung on a cross and threatened with fire, I would have to choosed the San Diego system for its ease of operation and maintenance and for its compatibility with earlier LRV systems.
